Kaka’s transfer from AC Milan to Real Madrid for a world record fee – at the time – of £56million was the first signal of the Spanish giants’ intent this summer.

Although the move shattered the previous record by a cool £10million, it was quickly eclipsed by the £80million Real paid for Cristiano Ronaldo and there were no indications of that being the end of their incredible spending spree either.

It means the 80,000 fans who pack into the Santiago Bernabeu stadium could be treated to some of the most exciting attacking football the world has ever seen, and consequently Real’s odds for glory in La Liga and the Champions League have shortened dramatically.

But what does losing their Brazilian superstar playmaker mean for AC Milan? After all, Kaka was the catalyst for the club’s Champions League success in 2007 and has continued to be highly influential since.

He is, of course, not the only high-profile departure from the Italian capital of style for coach Carlo Ancelotti has left for Chelsea.

That parting of the ways was more one of mutual benefit for both parties, whereas Milan attributed Kaka’s sale to “solely economic” reasons, thereby effectively admitting they are now weaker in terms of personnel as a result.

Milan, who have appointed former Brazil star Leonardo as Ancelotti’s successor, did not qualify for the Champions League last season and are not among the top half dozen in the betting this time, with their city rivals Inter above them in the list.

The latter fact also applies to Serie A, with Inter odds on as they seek a fifth consecutive title and Milan disputing second favouritism with Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s world-record breaking £80million move to Real Madrid has prompted the usual midsummer speculation about whether Manchester United can sustain their Premier League domination.

With the World Footballer of the Year finally being granted the move he has craved for so long, United are losing their top goalscorer and arguably biggest on-field influence in their success of the last few years.

Carlos Tevez has joined Ronaldo in heading through the Old Trafford exit door and consequently the Red Devils have drifted markedly in the Premier League title betting. They were initially odds-on to make it an unprecedented four in a row but may soon be challenged for favouritism by Chelsea.

Likewise, in the Champions League the 2008 winners and 2009 runners-up have been pushed out in the betting and leapfrogged by Real, whose odds have been cut drastically as a result of them signing Ronaldo and Kaka.

Barcelona, the holders, were installed as favourites to retain the trophy but there is no doubt Real are the springers in the market.

If Ronaldo can translate to the Spanish stage the goalscoring form he produced while in England then his new club have every chance of re-establishing themselves as the No 1 football superpower in Europe.

Real have lost their way in the last few seasons, regularly changing their head coach, and they looked thoroughly disjointed when taken apart by Liverpool in the Champions League knockout phase last term.

But new head coach Manuel Pellegrini, who excelled in charge of Villarreal, has some of the world’s finest attacking talent at his disposal now thanks to the leverage exerted by returning president Florentino Perez, and the latest incarnation of the Galacticos could be on course to rule the planet again.
